Court Clinic Overview
The Court Psychiatric Clinic (“Clinic”), established in 1925, is a department of the Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Court and one of 10 State Certified Forensic Centers in Ohio. The Clinic conducts court-ordered forensic evaluations for felony-level cases in Cuyahoga County in accordance with the Ohio Revised Code, Ohio Administrative Code, and best practices in forensic mental health assessment.
The Clinic is comprised of a multidisciplinary team of psychologists, psychiatrists, and social workers with training and expertise in the forensic specialty of their respective fields. Clinic examiners conduct evaluations addressing a variety of pretrial, presentence, and postsentence psycholegal issues, including (but not limited to) Competence to Stand Trial, Not Guilty by Reason of Insanity (NGRI), Post-NGRI, Intervention in Lieu of Conviction, and Second Opinions for Non-Secured Status and/or Conditional Release, as well as evaluations that offer opinions about factors relevant to the offense for purposes of mitigation, treatment recommendations, and eligibility for specialty court dockets.
In addition to evaluation services, the Clinic also offers expert consultation and training on forensic mental health issues to persons across various disciplines and settings (e.g., court personnel, attorneys, law enforcement, other mental health professionals). The Clinic also has a longstanding history as an educational institution, providing supervised training experiences to psychology predoctoral students, postdoctoral fellows in forensic psychology, forensic psychiatry fellows, psychiatry residents, and Master’s level social work students.
